In a recent interview to Standard Magazine singer Ellie Goulding talks about her encounter to the royal couple and how they invited her to sing at their wedding. She said that William gushed and asked her to sing for their first dance together as bride and groom. The couple saw Goulding at Radio 1's Big Weekend in Bangor, in May 2010.
The 24-year-old singer was introduced to the couple in May 2010 after her performance at the Radio 1's Big Weekend in Bangor. Backstage, Prince Williams and Kate Middleton, the future Duke and Duchess of Cambridge congratulated her for the show. ”He is so nice, just genuinely the nicest human being,” Goulding said about the Duke. "Prince William was just really gushing, and like, 'I really enjoyed the show’”, she told the magazine.Later, an aid of the palace came to her band rehearsing for the following USA tour and booked them for the Royal wedding on April 29. Goulding said she did not mention that the person sent to sign with them was from the Palace. “I kept it a secret - I just told them to be on their best behavior.”
The confirmation for the wedding performance came after the American tour and Goulding says she and the band rehearsed for weeks so that everything would be perfect at the royal event. “We all just forgot about it because we had to focus 100 % on the task in hand, which was America,” she said. “But when we got back, even though we'd just toured, we rehearsed for another week just for the wedding” the artist added.
The first song, for the first bride and groom dance, was Your Song. Then the band performed covers by Stevie Wonder and the Killers.
The singer also speaks in the interview about her battle with herself after her father left, when she was five. “I was giving myself the pressure of being this other person and succeeding” Goulding says, also mentioning a darker side of her, “who was meant to go down the bad route - dead-end jobs, taking drugs, being gobby, not giving a f***.” But she wisely concludes that “I have to accept it will never fully leave me.”
